To start with, tell us about the ultra-mega power transformer facility that Prime Electric is developing in Andhra Pradesh. Now with the first phase complete, what is the current capacity?
Prime Electric Ltd recently established the most modern, "state of the art" manufacturing facility for power transformers at Menakur SEZ in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The annual manufacturing capacity in the first phase is 10,000 MVA with voltage level up to 400kV. The annual capacity is proposed to be enhanced to be 35,000 MVA, up to765kV voltage level.
When are you targeting to complete the entire facility?
The present annual capacity of 10,000 MVA (up to 400kV level) is proposed to go up to 35000MVA, 765 KV Voltage in second phase. This will be completed in about two years.
Tell us more on your Russia-based foreign collaborators and the rationale behind choosing them as your partners.
Our technical collaborator OSC "VIT” - a division of OJSC Electrozavod - is one of the largest transformers manufacturing company in the world. OSC “VIT” is a pioneer in the development of design / technology for power transformers and reactors along with development of software for meeting critical parameters and
Calculations at various designs stage. They are associated with design and development for entire range of power transformers / reactors of all ratings up to 1,150kV voltage level for Electrozavod (Moscow). Designs developed by OSC “VIT” have been successfully implemented worldwide by manufacturers of power transformers and reactors.
Being a 100per cent EOU, which countries are likely to be your major business drivers?
Our manufacturing plant being located in a special economic zone (SEZ), we are mandated to generate foreign exchange that will require us necessarily to export a major part of our production to various countries depending upon the market conditions. We expect that major demand for power transformers still exist in African Countries, South America, Russia and other ex-USSR countries. However, we are open to export to any country in the world.
Given that India's demand for high-rating power transformers is going to pick up in the coming years, will you miss serving domestic market?
We will definitely supply to the domestic market as there is no bar for SEZ units to supply within the country.
In fact, we have already started production of transformers against the order of one leading state power utility within the country. Maharashtra Transmission Corporation has registered Prime Electric as approved vendor for supply of power transformer up to 400kV, 315 MVA (three phase) and167MVA (single phase).
How do you rate competition from China in the exports market?
We are prepared to face competition in domestic as well as export market. We have decided to maintain highest level of quality in production process which will help us in long term sustainability in the market. In addition, we shall focus on quality after-sale services within the client's premises. We also propose to establish full-fledged workshop for attending the repair and maintenance needs of customers.
