India appears to have inadequate testing facilities when it comes to testing of high voltage equipment.
What is your view?
It is a fact that the country does not have adequate testing facility for power transformers. That is why Prime Electric has also established a self-contained test plant within the factory premises. The test plant comprises of latest testing equipment including EHV static test system and Impulse generator from
High Volt of Germany, pioneers in production of testing equipment in the world. The test lab will be commissioned in January 2012. After this, we will apply for NABL accreditation. It is worth mentioning that this EHV static test system is being installed for the first time in the country.
What is your view about the Quality of Indian transformers? Are they at par with international standards?
There are a few multinational companies like ABB, Areva and Siemens that have the capability of manufacturing international standard transformers. We
are also trying to reach that level. However, there are many companies who are not quality conscious. The main reason for this is acceptability of sub-standard transformers in the market. Consumers, which are mainly the state utilities, are ready to accept sub-standard transformers and hence the companies are encouraged to continue to manufacture those. If the consumer is alert, the manufacturer will adhere to quality.
Prime Electric's envisaged power transformer capacity of 10,000MVA places it India's top league of Indian manufacturers. What is your vision and corporate ambition for Prime Electric in the medium term, say 5-7 years from now?
Our parent company PCI Ltd is already in business of high-end equipment of power sector for more than 25 years. Almost all the state and Central power sector utilities are clients of the company.
With establishment of this manufacturing plant, we want to gradually become a major manufacturer of power transformers and establish ourselves as a quality product and service provider, thereby contributing to the growth of power sector.
